The number one and the most obvious benefit of a Brazilian wax is that opposed to other hair removing techniques, it removes all of your pubic hair, leaving your skin really smooth and making you feel really good about yourself. It is a very unique experience and it is nothing like the regular shaving. So, I would say that the way you feel after getting a Brazilian wax is the most important thing that makes it stand out from other hair removing techniques.

THE BENEFITS OF A BRAZILIAN WAX

Another great benefit is that a Brazilian wax lasts longer than pretty much any other hair removing technique, except laser of course. This is because a Brazilian wax removes the hair from the follicle so your hair won’t grow back as quickly as when you were shaving. A Brazilian wax can last from 4 to 6 weeks depending on every person’s hair growth rate, while shaving only lasts a few days. Also, you may notice that the hair that grows back is a bit thinner and softer than before. You can read more about it in my How long does a Brazilian wax last post.

WHERE TO GET A BRAZILIAN WAX

There are a lot of places where you can get a nice Brazilian wax, just do a search on Google, ask your friends where they got it, browse through magazines, yellow pages and so on an so forth. Whatever you do, go to a professional, don’t try to do it yourself at home, you can do more
damage than good. My recommendation is to try out different places and see which one suits you better.

TIPS BEFORE GETTING A BRAZILIAN WAX

It is very important to know how to prepare for a brazilian wax. The first and the most important tip I can give anyone who is going to get a Brazilian wax is: don’t be shy. You should feel comfortable with the situation and be confident. Throw away all your worries.

Do your homework. Read as much as you can about Brazilian waxing, ask questions, talk to your friends, and participate in forums. You can even ask the aesthetician a thing or two on the phone before going to the salon. Read testimonials, reviews or experiences of other people who got a Brazilian wax before. You can also watch a Brazilian wax video.

If your pain threshold is really low, is to take a pain reliever 30 minutes before the waxing. This is not always necessary, but it might help.

Your hair need to be at least a quarter of an inch long, to help the wax stick to your hair. You don’t want to have your hair longer than half an inch though. If it is you might have to get it trimmed before the Brazilian wax. If you don’t trim it will be extremely painful. So, try to keep the length in between a quarter of an inch and half an inch. Also, before getting a Brazilian wax you want to clean your area extremely well.

A common mistake people do before getting a Brazilian wax, is using ice in order to numb the area. This is not a good idea. Ice will harden your skin and it won’t allow the hair to came out easily.

You can wear whatever you like, but at the location you will be asked to remove all your cloths from the waist down. Make sure you feel comfortable with your cloths on, because after the waxing, your skin will be sensitive.

BRAZILIAN WAXING PROCESS EXPLAINED

I’ve been to a couple of different places and I have been shown how it is done properly. However different places will do it differently according to what they like to do, but generally speaking this is how it should be run.

If it is your first time getting a Brazilian wax, the aesthetician will probably do a short overview of the procedure, and then you will be asked to take your clothes off from the waist down.

Usually, you will have to put on a disposable panty which has two uses: one is for privacy while the other is to assist the aesthetician in doing the waxing. This means that you might be asked to pull a skin tissue from one side to the other in order to keep the skin taut and allow the aesthetician to properly pull the wax off.

Next, the wax will be gently applied to the skin after it has been warmed in something that looks like a funny pot. It might feel a bit warm on your skin. That is normal. In order to prevent the wax from sticking to you skin some of the aestheticians might apply baby powder or oil to area that will be waxed, before applying the wax. This will allow the wax to stick only to the hair follicle only, so the discomfort you will feel will be reduced.

The wax is applied on the skin with a tool that looks like a stick or a tongue depressor. Special wax strips that look like paper are then pressed and rubbed against the desired area, making the wax stick to them while it is already clued to your hair. The wax strips are quickly pulled off using one hand against the direction of the hair growth while the other hand holds down the area above the strip that is being pulled.

After the pull, the aesthetician will apply pressure on the waxed area in order to reduce the discomfort. The procedure is repeated until the whole area is covered. Usually the waxing starts from the front towards the back.

The aesthetician will then apply a little bit of oil to your skin in order to remove any remaining wax. The oil or any other lubrication lotion also has the role of hydrating the waxed skin and reduce the discomfort. The Brazilian wax procedure ends with a retouch if needed. This means that the aesthetician will use a tweezers to remove any hairs that she missed during the waxing.

That’s it.

The whole procedure lasts between 15 and 30 minutes depending on each individual.

HOW MUCH DOES A BRAZILIAN WAX COST

A Brazilian wax will cost anywhere from 20 to 100 USD, depending on various factors including the location and the aesthetician performing the procedure. My personal recommendation, especially if it is your first time getting a Brazilian wax, is not to choose a cheap service. The average price of a Brazilian wax is around 50-60 USD, so I would say to go to a salon that charges a fee around that amount or even higher. You want the best service.

WHAT TO DO AFTER A BRAZILIAN WAXING

After a Brazilian wax it is a good time to use ice on in order to numb the affected area and avoid swelling. You are not allowed to take any hot baths or showers as it will make the area tenderer. Using Aloe Vera on the skin will reduce redness and irritation. For more information read my Brazilian wax aftercare post.
